Frequently Asked Questions
What does a watch winder do?
A watch winder keeps an automatic watch running while you are not wearing it. It gently rotates the watch to mimic wrist movement, topping up the mainspring so the time, date and other complications stay correct and the watch is ready to wear the moment you pick it up.
What is TPD, and how do I find the right setting for my watch?
TPD means turns per day — how many rotations a winder completes in 24 hours. Most automatic watches need between 650 and 1,800 TPD, and the correct figure depends on the movement inside your watch. Our free TPD database covers more than 4,900 models, so you can look up the exact TPD and winding direction for your watch in seconds.
Can a watch winder damage my watch?
No. Every modern automatic movement has a slipping mainspring that prevents over-winding, so a quality winder set to the correct TPD cannot harm your watch. Keeping it wound also saves wear on the crown from repeated hand-winding and resetting.
How do I choose the right size of watch winder?
Count the automatic watches you rotate. A single winder suits a one-watch owner, while collectors usually choose a double, four or six-watch unit. It is worth leaving a spare slot for the next purchase, as most collections grow. If you also need storage for quartz or manual watches, a combined winder and storage box is a good option.
What is the difference between a watch winder and a watch box?
A watch box stores and protects your watches but does not wind them, so automatics will stop after a day or two. A watch winder keeps automatic watches running and ready to wear. Many collectors use both: a winder for the watches in regular rotation and a box for the rest of the collection.
What warranty do your watch winders come with?
Our watch winders come with a 3-year warranty as standard, covering the motor and electronics. Every unit is checked before dispatch, and our UK team handles warranty claims directly, with no need to send your winder overseas.
Can you repair a watch winder that has stopped working?
Yes. We repair Tempus and Aevitas watch winders in-house in the UK, including winders that are out of warranty — a service most brands do not offer. Motors, belts and electronics can usually be replaced, which is far cheaper than buying a new winder.
How does delivery work, and what if I change my mind?
UK delivery is free, and orders are dispatched promptly in protective packaging. If the winder or box is not right, you can return it within 30 days for a refund or exchange.
Is my order gift-ready?
Yes. Orders arrive in a signature black gift box, so a winder or watch box bought as a present can be given straight away with no extra wrapping needed.
